This is an interactive network/graph diagram that represents students' problem solving pathways. Each node (circle) is a state (i.e. mathematical expression; hover over a node for the expression). The links between nodes represent the transformation the students made. Additionally, the thickness of the arrow and line represents how many students made that transformations. The classification of the node if give by the color of the nodes. For example: blue is the start state, green is the goal state, and red nodes are dead ends. For more information and the theory behind the classifications, please visit this link.
Click on the 'Controls' button, to enable interactivity and access additional controls for the graph.

This visualization shows the first steps that students took. The larger the box the greater the number of students who made that first transformation. Similar to the network/graph diagram, the color of the box represents the classification of the first step. Some first steps might be very rare, which leads to the box being small. Hovering or clicking on a box will reveal addition information.

This table displays example student problem attempts of each classification type. It also displays the percentage of attempts that have the respective classification. In the table, the blue circle represents the start state, and the colored arrows represents the classification of the transformations: optimal, suboptimal, dead end. Additionally, green arrows indicate the completion of a problem, i.e. tranformation that leads to the goal state.
